What is your morning experience? Blaring alarm, followed by hitting the snooze button, once maybe twice?
Scrambling to get ready and get out the door? Late again?
Are you repeating the same pattern day after day… is this your morning ritual?
Do you wake up before the alarm goes off? Excited to begin creating the day and life that you want?
We all have a morning ritual whether we’re aware of it or not. Without a plan, you are leaving your day open to being influenced by other peoples agenda.
Making it easy to get sidetracked and stressed out.
Healthy, morning routines set the tone for the day. They can help you feel calm and in control having a powerful ripple effect on your mood, happiness and focus, while eliminating stress and chaos. Your morning routine could be a few minutes or a few hours. It totally depends on you.
By doing the things that you decided in advance that you wanted to do, you are starting your day with intention. What activities would you want pull off on a daily basis? How will you start your day with a win under your belt before you have to face the world?
Crafting a morning routine, being consciously aware that you are spending your time in ways that make you and your quality of life better, will maximize your energy, productivity and creativity all day long.
When deciding on what rituals you want to include in your routine keep it simple and easy to follow. As you experiment with different rituals, give each new element enough time so that you can experience if the activity is a good fit for you. Trying something for just a couple of days before giving up isn’t enough.
Planning the evening before is effective because we have a limited amount of willpower and decision-making ability every day. Making too many decisions in the morning will slow you down and drain your brain for the rest of the day. If you can eliminate decision making from your mornings, you’ll have more energy and time.
Subscribe to the concept that an AM routine can start in the PM. What rituals do you want to incorporate into your morning routine? Exercise? If so put out your gym clothes the night before. Writing? Have your materials ready to go. Reading a book? Pick it out the night before and put it somewhere you will see it first thing.
I first started my morning ritual in 2001. At that time I followed the Morning Pages ritual that Julia Cameron developed. This journaling technique involves hand writing at least three pages with stream of consciousness writing, as soon as you wake up. It’s an effective way to tame mental clutter, sharpen your focus and unlock creativity.
Over the years my practice has changed, elements have been added and subtracted. My practice grows to fit the needs of the person that I am now. Currently I have the morning ritual using elements that I have learned from The Master Key Experience.
Other rituals that may include in their routine are:
Movement-This could be a workout, yoga, dance or gentle stretching. You will feel energized and give a boost to your metabolism.
Motivation – Helps you stick to your goals by setting the stage for a positive and purposeful day. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had a very simple yet profound morning routine. Every morning he’d look in the mirror and ask himself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” He explained that if the answer was a ‘no’ for a number of days in a row, it meant that he needed to change something. Likewise, Benjamin Franklin began his mornings by asking himself, “What good shall I do this day?”
Meditation – Improves focus, enhances your awareness and clears your mind. Establishing a daily meditation practice also reduces stress, promotes emotional stability and strengthens the immune system.
We can all turn our morning into a more positive experience, we just have to know where to start. So go ahead, seize the day by adding simple rituals into your morning routine!
